What Happens at a Commissioning?


The Ship Comes to Life and is Officially Dedicated to Service in the United States Navy.

Events for Commissioning


  • The “Chairman’s Reception” (sometimes called the “Commissioning Committee Reception”) Hosted by the committee and held Wednesday evening prior to the ceremony. 

  • The “Platform Briefing and Distinguished Guests Assembly” (DV Breakfast) hosted Saturday morning prior to the ceremony.  


  • “Commanding Officer’s Reception”.  Hosted by the committee and held aboard the ship on Friday evening of commissioning week.  Guests are typically the committee, Ship’s Officers, and Chief Petty Officer’s Mess.

  • “Crew Picnic”.  Hosted by the committee and held prior to commissioning.  Guests are typically the committee and members of the crew and their families.   Return
