Navigation Handling of PostPanamax Vessels

Our speakers for the June  meeting are Craig Maggioni , a Navy league member   and Savannah River  Pilot and Bob Cooey, a longstanding Savannah Docking Master.They will provide an update on the navigation/handling of the larger vessels , including  Post- Panamax vessels, calling at Savannah. For example, vessels having a reported length  of >1200’ have called  recently at Savannah..

Craig Maggioni is  a native Savannahian and honors graduate from the US Merchant Marine Academy( Kings Point).Following graduation , he accepted a commission as a  US Naval Reserve officer.He  served with the Military Sealift Command as a ship’s officer..In 2007, he joined the Savannah Pilots Association, trained to become a pilot  and has served as a river  Pilot since 2009. As evidence of his abilities, he was awarded the Merchant Marine Expeditionary Medal by the Secretary of Transportation.

 

Bob Cooey comes from a seagoing family. His father was a German  sail ship  captain. Bob grew up in the NY area and, as a child, worked in the summers aboard vessels. . At age 16, he started working on tugs/barges in the North Atlantic. Eventually,he specialized in heavy weather towing. After being a NY & NJ pilot for more than 20 years, he was transferred to Savannah where he has served for more than 20 years  as a Pilot/Docking Master for Moran Towing Co.
